UK – 2.5MW Wind Turbine ANM

GridGEM enables Client-Side Active Network Management for Wind Turbine

Overview & Client Problem

Clean Earth Energy (www.cleanearthenergy.com) were offered an Active Network Management (ANM) connection onto Scottish Power’s network in Scotland for a 1.5MW Vensys wind turbine.

The DNO required a 3rd party client-side interface to accept their dynamic power point limit (PPL) and ensure that the power output of the Vensys wind turbine responded dynamically, and in realtime, as required.

The client also needed data to ensure that when the PPL changed they were alerted immediately and had the data to analyse network-instigated generation reduction plus other power quality & energy-related data points..

Argand’s Solution

Argand designed, built and delivered a turnkey GridGEM ANM control and monitoring solution for the project. The GridGEM technology directly interfaced with the DNO ANM panel, converting the incoming signal into a format that could be communicated to the wind turbine control system such that the turbine was able to interpret and respond accordingly. In addition, the GridGEM ANM system incorporated a full monitoring system to collect, store, transmit and process the signal data from the DNO, with signals sent to the wind turbine and all power flows across the client-side of the network. The client accessed this data via Argand’s GridEYE platform with alerts sent immediately to the client’s O&M team. allowing them specific analysis and provision of regular performance reporting.

Client Benefits

The result has been to provide Clean Earth Energy with an independent system that provides assurance in relation to the DNO ANM activation requirements and manages the output of their turbine dynamically. This is supported by critical data to ensure system optimisation. The client also receives real-time & proactive exception alerts which benefit the O&M team & ensure they can respond pro-actively to underperformance & / or electrical issues when required.
