  • Overview
    • MetaFin, a market leading electropaint and powder coating specialist, engaged with Argand Solutions to deliver an energy monitoring solution.  Specifically, they were looking to develop an energy reduction strategy that was led by objective data. As such, Metafin chose Argand’s energy monitoring platform called Energy Lenz. After installing Schneider electricity meters (PM5110), plus gas & water meters, Metafin utilised Argand’s Lenz platform to visualise their real-time data. The platform is now being used to enable a strategic approach to energy reduction at their manufacturing facility driven by Argand’s real-time energy monitoring platform.

 

  • Client Problem
    • MetaFin (www.metafin.co.uk), a large manufacturing business that specialises in cathodic electropaint and powder coating processes, has a significant annual spend on electricity, gas and water as a result of its growing business. The managing director, Paul Bundy, determined that the collection of objective data in real-time, via a commercially focused energy monitoring platform, was required in order to specifically determine where to invest in energy reduction opportunities.  This energy monitoring would enable energy reduction, lower carbon emissions and more cost-efficient products. Paul asked Argand Solutions and another company to provide a quotation for a solution to meet his needs. This included the requirement for a software platform that would aesthetically engage both him and his staff. In addition, he wanted to take control of the metering installation such that the chosen energy monitoring solution would seamlessly integrate with whichever meters he installed.

 

  • Argand’s Solution
    • Argand Solutions was chosen to enable Metafin to achieve their energy monitoring and energy reduction goals using our Energy Lenz platform. Predominantly this was due to our already proven capability to integrate with client-installed metering systems. In addition, our experience of working with Schneider electricity meters, Metafin’s chosen meter provider, was key to the decision. Argand worked with Metafin to determine the best Schneider meter for their needs and budget and chose the PM5110 (http://www.schneider-electric.com/en/product-range/61281-powerlogic-pm5000-series/.) After working with Metafin’s electrical installation engineer, Argand provided Metafin with a number of communication hubs that were able to communicate in real-time with the Schneider PM5110 electricity meters in order to extract data at regular time periods. In addition, the communication hubs also included a pulse counting system to extract data from the gas meters such that they provided an integrated solution for the client. Once the installation was complete, tested and commissioned, Argand worked with the client to setup all of their tariff structures to ensure that the energy monitoring system accounted for the energy consumption accurately – for electricity, gas & water.

  • Client Benefits
    • The flexibility of Argand’s energy monitoring solution and its ability to integrate seamlessly with Metafin’s chosen hardware supplier(s), enabled MetaFin to install an integrated energy monitoring system at half the cost of Argand’s competitor products.  Argand also provided the client with additional benefits over and above the originally scoped project. Predominantly this relates to asset risk analysis. The Schneider PM5110 meters provide electrical power quality data which enables Argand’s Energy Lenz software platform to provide the client with real-time assessments of asset degradation, asset failure and physical system limit analysis. In addition, all the data is web enabled and accessible by Metafin’s employees via Argand’s energy monitoring mobile application (iOS & Android) to ensure they have up-to-date information for all of the specific processes. The system was installed in the summer of 2016 and we’ll report on the energy monitoring successes over the coming months.
