Argand Engineers Dynamic Export Control System for Combined CHP & Hydro Energy Project in Scotland

Over the past three years, Argand Solutions has been providing constraint management (export limitation, ANM etc) and dynamic control systems for the solar PV and wind energy industry. Arguably the most reliable solution of its kind, with zero downtime, GridGEM® is now monitoring and controlling over 25 megawatts of renewable energy generation.

Now, Argand Solutions expertise in constraints management & dynamic control has been strengthened further by our latest project to enable a joint combined heat and power (CHP) system and hydro scheme to connect to a constrained part of Scottish Power’s grid.

Scottish Hydro Power developer, H20 Hydro, approached Argand Solutions for a solution to enable them to install a hydro scheme alongside CHP. Providing a guarantee to the Scottish Distribution Network Operator that the export limit would not be broken and meeting all the DNO’s requirements as set down in their policy document.

With an export limit of 200kW export limit and an existing CHP generation of 150kW, the proposed 100kW Hydro power scheme on its own would breach the export limit and would not have been allowed to run.

Argand worked with the client to provide an integrated solution that provided demand response to bring in non-critical loads first prior to any dynamic management of the Hydro scheme – ensuring an optimal economic solution.

The site is now monitored remotely via Argand’s cloud visualisation & analytics platform – Energy Lenz®. Energy Lenz® will also provide the client with asset risk management for their electrical network to enable them to proactively determine failure risks to drive proactive maintenance.
